  • This early work by Alfred Russel Wallace was originally published in 1853 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'A Narrative of Travels on the Amazon and Rio Negro' is a detailed description of Wallace's observations of the human inhabitants, animal life, and environment of the Amazon and Rio Negra. Alfred Russel Wallace was born on 8th January 1823 in the village of Llanbadoc, in Monmouthshire, Wales. Wallace was inspired by the travelling naturalists of the day and decided to begin his exploration career collecting specimens in the Amazon rainforest. He explored the Rio Negra for four years, making notes on the peoples and languages he encountered as well as the geography, flora, and fauna. While travelling, Wallace refined his thoughts about evolution and in 1858 he outlined his theory of natural selection in an article he sent to Charles Darwin. Wallace made a huge contribution to the natural sciences and he will continue to be remembered as one of the key figures in the development of evolutionary theory.

  • "For many years Alfred Russel Wallace traveled the globe, observing fauna and flora and wondering whether the environment in which they lived affected their development. Island Life, a classic of scientific literature, is the result of those studies. In it, he examines a variety of biospheres to determine whether species are immutable (as was long thought), regardless of changing conditions in their surroundings, or are in fact capable of adapting in order to survive.Island Life is divided into two parts: ¿The Dispersal of Organisms: Its Phenomena, Laws, and Causes¿ and ¿Insular Faunas and Floras.¿ In Part 1, Wallace discusses the distribution across the planet of plants and animals, then examines how changes of climate have affected their dispersal. Part 2 contains case studies of the organisms on islands as varied as the Galapagos, Great Britain, and Madagascar.English naturalist ALFRED RUSSEL WALLACE (1823¿1913) developed a theory of natural selection independent of his contemporary Charles Darwin. His works include Contributions to the Theory of Natural Selection (1870), The Geographical Distribution of Animals (1876), and Darwinism (1889)."

  • Henry Walter Bates was an English naturalist and explorer who gave the first scientific account of mimicry in animals. He was most famous for his expedition to the rainforests of the Amazon with Alfred Russel Wallace, which took place between 1848 and 1852. Upon returning home eleven years after his departure, Bates wrote down his findings. The Naturalist on the River Amazons, published in two volumes, has become his best-known work. The first volume focuses on the events and discoveries which had taken place between their arrival in the Brazilian Amazon and their journey to the Barra of the Rio Negro.

  • Family Palmae (Arecaceae) is a family of monocotyledons comprising of about 200 genera and 1,500 species. Phoenix L. is one of the genera which contain a dozen species, all native to the tropical or subtropical regions of Africa or Southern Asia. Date palm is diploid (2n=36), perennial tree. Being dioecious in nature, date palm has separate female and male individuals. Female palm trees are cultivated for their nutritive fruits while male trees produce pollens. The present research was conducted at Date Palm Research Station, Jhang, Pakistan, where 32 cultivars of date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) were studied for the evaluation of qualitative and quantitative morphological characteristics in order to obtain accurate knowledge and description of the genetic resources. The identification of the most relevant characteristics of date palm was done by descriptors in field surveys during vegetative and reproductive periods. Fruits were taken to Anatomy lab, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, Pakistan where measurements regarding qualitative and quantitative characteristics were recorded.

  • The Amazon Basin contains the largest and most diverse tropical rainforest in the world. Besides the Andes and the Atlantic Ocean, the rainforest is bounded to the north by the Guiana crystalline shield and to the south by the Brazilian crystalline shield, marked at their edges by cataracts in the rivers and often dominated by grasslands. This book is motivated not just by the Amazons scientific interest but also by its role in many ecosystem functions critical to life on Earth. These ecosystems are characterized both by their complexity and their interactive, higher-order linkages among both abiotic and biotic components. Within Amazonia, the Western Amazon (west of 65° latitude) is the most pristine and, perhaps, the most complex within the Amazon Basin. This Western Amazon may be broadly divided into non-flooded forests (e.g. terra firme, white sand, palm) and forests flooded with white water (generally referred to as várzea) and with black water (generally referred to as igapó). Here, for the first time, is a book devoted entirely to Western Amazonia, containing chapters by scientists at the forefront of their own areas of expertise. It should be a valuable resource for all future researchers and scholars who venture into Western Amazonia, as it continues to be one of the most beautiful, mysterious, remote and important ecosystems on Earth.
